Applications of Hydrogen
Petroleum Refining
Hydrogen is used to convert or improve the quality of crude oil to produce fuel, for example, hydrogen sulfide is used as a precursor to remove sulfur in oils, which are air pollutants such as acid rain. Hydrogen is also
used as a starting material in the process. Hydrodealkylation to convert toluene to benzene and methane, etc.
Fuel Cells
Hydrogen is exploited to generate electricity in fuel cells. In which reduction and oxidation reactions occur in the electrolyte solution, causing an electric current. This is considered a clean production. Because the product obtained from production is water and no carbon dioxide emissions.
Food industry
In the food industry, hydrogenation is used to convert the structure of unsaturated fatty acids in animal fats and vegetable oils into saturated fatty acids. for use in the production of shortening Peanut butter and margarine, etc.
Pharmaceuticals
In the pharmaceutical industry, hydrogen is used as a precursor to make Sorbitol, a sugar alcohol. which is used to produce cosmetic products, binders and surfactants, etc.
